FAQ
What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)?
MLD is a specialized, slow, gentle massage sequence created in the 1930s by Dr. Emile Vodder, a European physiotherapist, to assist in the removal of waste products in the tissue by stimulating the lymph system. Extremely relaxing and calming, it can help to detoxify the body and greatly reduce bruising, swelling and scarring from injuries or surgeries, has been found to be helpful with chronic and auto-immune disorders and assists the lymph system in functioning better.
Where does my MLD session take place?
In a quiet and lovely room, on a comfortable massage table. You will be covered by a sheet and blanket, only certain areas of the body will be exposed during the treatment.
What does MLD/Lymphatic drainage feel like?
Extremely relaxing and calming, MLD is usually performed directly on the skin with a specialized, slow, gentle massage sequence. It is generally a light pressure that stimulates lymph flow to eliminate cellular waste and encourage movement to areas where clusters of lymph nodes reside.
What is the lymph system?
Basically, the lymphatics are the "garbage disposal system" of the body. It collects metabolized waste, excess fluids, inorganic materials and larger size molecules. The lymph nodes are "filtering stations" that render bacteria, toxins, viruses, cancer cells and cellular waste harmless. The amount of lymph nodes can vary, anywhere from 500-800 nodes in the body. Within the lymph system are the T cells referred to as "killer cells", lymphocytes (white blood cells) for good immune response.
What conditions is MLD used for?
Stress & tension, pain, detoxification of the tissues, inflammation, bruising, swelling, scar tissue, pre and post surgery, post injury, lymphedema, lipiodema, auto-immune conditions and to maintain a strong immune response for good health.
How quickly after my surgery can I receive Lymphatic Treatments?
With the approval of your physician treatment often begins 5-7 days after surgery. Some physicians may request MLD sooner.
Can MLD soften scar tissue?
Yes, MLD can prevent excess scar tissue from forming by reducing swelling, pain, and bruising. MLD can also softens scar tissue from older procedures or injuries.
How will I feel after the MLD session?
Most people feel very relaxed with a sense of well-being, including feeling very energized and free from pain. On occasion, depending upon the condition, clients may experience flu-like symptoms since toxins are being released from your soft tissue during MLD, in that case you should rest. It is important that all clients drink plenty of water or electrolyte water after the MLD session to continue the benefits from the treatment.
